The Chester armchair by Poltrona Frau has a fascinating history that goes back even before the Great War. During his sojourns in London, Renzo Frau had the opportunity to discover the sofas and armchairs known as Chesterfield, found in the city's most exclusive clubs. He was impressed by their distinctive features and realised the potential of this furniture. Initially, he decided to import the models to Italy, but later decided to produce them himself, making substantial modifications to adapt them to Italian taste. Thus, in 1912, Frau's Chester was born, a handmade work of art that still enchants design lovers today. The Chester armchair features a sophisticated springing system achieved through the use of biconical steel springs. These springs are positioned by hand and attached to jute straps on a solid, seasoned beech frame. The seat upholstery is made of rubberised horsehair, while the backrest and armrests are made of hand-moulded vegetable hair. This craftsmanship gives the armchair an extraordinary quality and strength.
The comfort of the Chester armchair is guaranteed by the seat cushions, made of soft goose down, which welcome the body in a cosy embrace. The feet of the armchair can be spherical or tall, available in dark walnut-stained beech or black lacquered beech finishes. Alternatively, you can choose wooden feet upholstered in fine leather, adding a touch of elegance and refinement.
The design of the Chester armchair and Chester sofa is inspired by the classic model from Edwardian England, taken up by Renzo Frau in his first catalogue in 1912. This model was inspired by the sofas and armchairs that adorned English clubs and country houses of the time. Since then, the Chester has become an icon of the Poltrona Frau brand, admired for its capitonné workmanship executed entirely by hand and for the characteristic pleating of the armrests, which lend a touch of elegance and refinement to the armchair.
