The modern conception of the home leads to breaking down walls to expand the space available, its functionality and usability without neglecting aesthetics. Until a few years ago, setting up the kitchen and living room in the same space was the prerogative of studios, lofts and small apartments. Today this choice is also extended to large apartments and bright penthouses.
“Open space” describes the main feature of this living space, which is the almost total absence of walls. However it is possible to separate the various areas studying carefully the arrangement of the large pieces of furniture. A bookcase or cabinet, maybe double- faced, are perfect for separating the living area from the night zone, a island sofa dor dividing the living room from the kitchen. This furniture must customize and characterize the environment, but should not be a barrier to the passage of light. A good idea is also to choose a different flooring for each section of the space; however, it is better to identify an interpretative key, a theme, a color or a style for your home.
The core of an open space is usualy the kitchen. The kitchen area and the dining room reflect the personality of those who live the house. A large table is ideal to welcome friends and serve delicious dinners, though your best bet is to choose an extendable table to be opened on occasions. If you are unlikely to throw dinners with many guests, opt for a kitchen island surrounded by stools ideal for breakfast, a quick meal and a drink with friends.
The open space is also a space for a particular style. Those who like to renew often their habitat appreciate this solution, because they can easily move the furniture and remodel the rooms. The trick is trying to immagine all the different functions one room can have and to buy multi-function furniture like sofa beds, consoles and storage-ottomans.
Sometimes the open space includes not only the living area but also the night area. Placing the bed in the loft can cut at least in vertical space for intimacy.
The watchwords for furnishing an open space are simplicity, flexibility and lightness. In this modern and unconvetional environment, the neutral colors like white or natural wood are the best choice, as well as technological materials or steel. Complements are very important to warm up the atmosphere and personalize the enviroment: curtains, cushions, paintings, vases and posters to combine creating complementary pairings.
